Southend Tech runs Raspberry Jams, coding and digital making events in Southend and Essex using the Raspberry Pi computer, the BBC MicroBit and lots of other fun tech and electronics.

Southend workshops for 12-15yr olds Pioneers competition
Saturdays 18th March 2017 – 1pm – 5pm
The Old Waterworks, North Road, Southend
A competition to create a funny tech related project and make a video of it. Build a game or app using Raspberry Pi, Microbit, Scratch, Python, mobile phone, HTC Vive, laptops or any other kind of tech, hardware or software you may have.
(younger Yr7 – 11 year olds and older Yr 11 – 16 year olds are also eligible.)
Bring your own laptop, tech and ideas or hack some of our projects and kit.
Entrants will receive ongoing local mentoring, a chance to demo their projects at our Raspberry Jams and invites to more advanced workshops like cyber security, AI, games development.
Winners will be invited to a code camp in London, and have their projects professionally filmed, turned into resources and published by Raspberry Pi.

Raspberry Pi digital making club

Learn to code and make using the Raspberry Pi, BBC MicroBit, Arduino or laptop.
Make digital arts projects using electronics to interact with the real world.
No need to book, just turn up. (Occasional organised workshops from 5pm or 6pm.)

Informal drop in meetup with Essex Fablab showing 3D printers and laser cutter products.
Feel free to attend to learn more about Raspberry Pi, Microbits, coding, electronics, 3D printers and laser cutting.
Occasional more organised larger events will be organised at Wat Tyler Park.

Tim Peake Astro Pi Sonic Pi winners

The Mitchell Mob won the 11 years and under Sonic Pi Astro Pi competition after taking part in a Southend Tech SonicPi AstroPi workshop.
Tim Peake sent a video message playing the music they coded whilst he was in space on the International Space Station.

Compose space-age tunes for Tim Peake workshops

Tim Peake was aboard the International Space Station and asked school children to compose some music for him to listen to whilst he is in space.

The music was composed on the AstroPi (augmented Raspberry Pi) computers, which Tim used to run children’s experiments, using SonicPi.
There were workshops in Southend in June and around Essex in July – see list of dates.
Suitable for 8 yrs+. Bring a charged laptop – software also runs on Windows/Mac

Young persons mini Raspberry Jam

Thursday 7th April 12 – 4 pm at Temporary Arts Project, Southend.

We are holding a mini youth Raspberry Jam for and run by young people to show their projects, socialise and to learn more about the Raspberry Pi, BBC MicroBit, SonicPi, AstroPi, coding and making projects. (See below for more info on these.)

A number of young people already help at Raspberry Jams and workshops in Southend, Chelmsford, London and elsewhere, and we hope that more would like to learn how to mentor people at events.
Some of them have already won awards for the work they are doing.

Please bring a charged laptop (if you have one) and anything that you would like to show or demonstrate. There will be Raspberry Pis setup for people to use.

We’ll have the Piwars robot to show, which the Southend Raspberry Pi team built.

Raspberry Pi Big Birthday Weekend

Raspberry Pi is holding a birthday party to celebrate the 4th Birthday of the Raspberry Pi on 5th/6th March in Cambridge. Tickets are still available for the Sunday. Book here.
@SouthendTech ran the Sonic Pi for Tim Peake workshop Sunday 10:30-11:45 am
and presented “How to make music using Sonic Pi” on Sunday 1.30 pm and will run the SonicPi workshops in Essex.

BBC MicroBit Python Preview
Monday 15th February 7 pm – 9pm and other dates

(50 m south of the BP garage on West Road)

The BBC will shortly be giving one million year 7 pupils a free BBC MicroBit.
Southend Tech and a “Computer at Schools” Master Teacher will be showing us the BBC MicroBit and how to program it using Python. (This hasn’t been publicly released on yet.)
It can do some really cool things with some very simple Python.
Suitable for 11yrs+ with experience of Python programming.
No booking required.

If you can help with this or would know a young person who would like to do some works experience / apprenticeship or needs some career advice, please get in contact.

Currently, Silkstream, who have helped run the html workshop at the Southend Raspberry Jam are looking for a “Web design / development apprentice”.
